Latinx Writers: A Virtual Symposium 2020 ($)
Take part in a broad forum on Latinx children’s and young adult literature, with other Latinx writers. Live Zoom session, pre-recorded sessions, craft exercises, and small group discussions. Exercises will build from week to week in the direction of a first draft. September 15 – October 15, 2020. Hosted by Highlights Foundation. Scholarships available.

#PitMad (free)
Twitter pitch party for unagented authors and illustrators in all genres, Thursday, September 3, 2020 from 8am – 8pm Eastern Time. Happens on Twitter, but see website for detailed instructions including the #hashtags that will help picture book agents find your pitch. Hosted by Brenda Drake and the PitchWars committee.

ReVISIONweek (free)
Revise your PB manuscripts that you wrote for challenges earlier in the year!  The challenge is scaled down this year so that it is doable despite these upside-down times. A week of support, inspiration, and revision magic. OH, and prizes! Always prizes! Enroll during the first week of September, event is September 9 16, 2020. Hosted by children’s authors Lauren H. Smart Dummies (free)

Diversity Day: Writing Outside Your Lane ($)
Newbery-winning author Linda Sue Park, Lee and Low editor Kandace Coston, book expert and editor Kim Childress, and author Natalie Davis Miller will show you how, in this thoughtful and eye-opening online conference. September 12, 2020, 10am – 3pm Eastern Time. Hosted by Indiana SCBWI.

Researching at the Smithsonian Libraries (*See note)
Join Outreach Librarian Erin Clements Rushing and Mid-Atlantic SCBWI Non-Fiction Coordinator Marcie Atkins for an evening of learning how you can use resources at the Smithsonian for your work, from near or far. September 22, 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm Eastern Time. Hosted by Mid-Atlantic SCBWI. *Free, but must be dues-paying member of SCBWI.

Writing Picture Books: From Creation to Publication ($)
Award-winning children’s author Rosie J. Pova will cover the essential elements and steps in the process of creating picture books, from generating story ideas to finishing a first draft, picking a catchy title, to revising and submitting. Eight weeks beginning Monday, September 14, 2020. Hosted by Writing Workshops.

You Can Write a Picture Book! ($)
Study and Workshop with Adrien Kade Sdao. Students will achieve an understanding of the purpose, structure, and craft of a picture book. Additionally, each student will 1) submit a picture book manuscript up to 1,000 words for detailed line and global notes and 2) create a storyboard and book dummy for their manuscript. Four weeks beginning September 7. Hosted by Antioch University.

Fall Writing Frenzy (free)

Filling the Writer’s Toolbox ($)

Picture Book Summit ($)

Picture Books with Bibi Lewis ($)
Preparing your work for submission? SCBWI/Smithsonian Institution Nonfiction Workshop ($)
SCBWI’s first-ever nonfiction workshop with the Smithsonian will be held online November 6-8, 2020. Registration will reopen in September with unlimited seating available. Stay tuned to scbwi.org.

ReFoReMo Monthly Mini Writing Challenge (free)
Themed monthly writing challenges the third Tuesday of the month from April through January, with a focus on extending mentor text research from the March ReFoReMo Challenge into writing. This month’s challenge happens September 15. Hosted by our own Carrie Charley Brown and Kirsti Call.

SCBWI Draw This! Challenge (See note*)

SCBWI: Tomie De Paulo Master Class (see note*)
To honor the memory of Tomie De Paulo, beloved author/illustrator of hundreds of picture books, SCBWI is making available a three-part master class he recorded with Lin Oliver. *Free, but must be a dues-paying member of SCBWI.

SCBWI: YouTube Channel, The Vault (free)
SCBWI has over thirty years of video archives featuring speakers at their annual conference–authors, illustrators, editors, agents, and publishers. SCBWI has been releasing videos from this archive to their new YouTube channel, The Vault, every Tuesday and Thursday starting this past May.
