JANUARY EVENTS

12×12 Picture Book Challenge ($)
Write 12 picture books in 12 months. Annual membership includes critique opportunities, monthly live webinars, special interest groups, and the support of the entire 12×12 community. Register in January and February for a full-year membership. Hosted by children’s author Julie Hedlund. 

Astra International Picture Book Writing Contest 2020 – 2021 (free)
The purpose of this contest is to encourage, discover and honor talented writers of texts for picture books from all over the world; to foster literary excellence in books for young children; and to promote international cooperation and understanding through picture books. Significant cash prizes in addition to option for publication for winners. Submissions open October 22, 2020 through April 30, 2021.

The Craft and Business of Writing Children’s Picture Books ($)
Join Assistant Editor Rosie Ahmed (Penguin Random House), acquiring Editor/Art Director/former Agent Mira Reisberg, and five guest Editors and Agents for a six-week intensive journey starting January 11, 2021. Hosted by Children’s Book Academy.

Goal Setting For 2021 (free)
Set your writing intentions for 2021. A craft chat with author Erin Dionne. Wednesday, January 6, 7pm Eastern Time. Hosted by The Writers’ Loft.

Lyrical Language Lab ($)
Learn to make your picture books lyrical, whether or not they rhyme. Next 10-week class starts in January, 2021, taught by children’s author Renee LaTulippe. Sign up for email list to receive information about self-study courses.

Rate Your Story ($)
Manuscript critiques from professionals in the field, among other benefits. Sometimes holds open submission days with free critiques for nonmembers. Membership for 2021 is full but SpeedPass critiques are available. Also watch the site for events and free critique opportunities. 

ReFoReMo Monthly Mini Writing Challenge (free)
Themed monthly writing challenges the third Tuesday of the month from April through January, with a focus on extending mentor text research from the March ReFoReMo Challenge into writing. This month’s challenge happens January 19. Hosted by our own Carrie Charley Brown and Kirsti Call.

ReVISIONweek Tune-Up Day, Wednesday, January 20th. (free)

Storystorm (free)
Come up with 30 story ideas in the 31 days of January. Inspirational guest posts. Raffle of prizes for those who succeed. Hosted by children’s author Tara Lazar.

Storyteller Academy ($)
Online, on-demand and scheduled courses taught by industry professionals, writing community, and optional critique groups, for a monthly or annual membership fee. Term 1 courses via Zoom start in January and run through March. Hosted by writer/illustrator Arree Chung.

Virtual SCBWI Florida Annual Regional Conference ($)

12 Months of Books Challenge
For authors/illustrators with 2021 children’s books, and for relatives/friends of children who love to receive books as gifts. Authors with 2021 children’s book releases register to be included on a list organized by month. Book buyers refer to the list to choose books, then preorder from their own favorite bookstores, so that every month of 2021, a new book will arrive on their favorite kiddo’s doorstep! Authors/illustrators can update information through the year for a regular update email that goes to buyers. Hosted by author Tamara Girardi.

Nevada SCBWI Mentorship Program ($)
Every other year, Nevada SCBWI hosts its flagship Mentor Program, the first of its kind among SCBWI. You do not have to live in Nevada to participate. The 2021 program is hybrid, launching by Zoom and culminating at an in-person retreat in Virginia City, Nevada (USA), in September 2021. Limited to 12 participants; those not chosen will receive a manuscript critique. Applications open until January 31.

NonFiction Fest (free) (@NFFest)
NF Fest turns February into a crash course in writing nonfiction for children. Daily blog posts from authors and industry professionals and a Facebook community. Register from January 15 – 31 to be eligible for prizes. Hosted by the NonFiction Chicks: Lisa Amstutz, Stephanie Bearce, Nancy Churnin, Susie Kralovansky, Pat Miller, Linda Skeers, and Peggy Thomas.

SCBWI Virtual Winter Conference ($)

I’d love to see #50PreciousWords on the March calendar – March 2-7 – to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday – it’s free as always and there will be lots of awesome prizes.
