Sloth & Squirrel In a Pickle, by Cathy Ballou Mealey

The pickles were slippery.

The jars were slippery.

The floors were slippery.

Delightfully heartwarming and hilarious, Sloth and Squirrel in a Pickle by Cathy Ballou Mealey, illustrated by Kelly Collier made me laugh out loud. Themes of friendship, making the best of a bad situation and perseverance make this the kind of picture book that evokes discussion. I especially love the unlikely friendship of a speedy squirrel and a slow sloth who do things VERY differently, yet appreciate those differences in each other. I love how this book shows that sometimes our worst mistakes lead to our best ideas and friendship is more important than money or material things. Every relatable word of this story and its bright, expansive illustrations makes this a book that begs to be re-read.

  1. This sounds fantastic! I can just imagine the smell…Where I used to teach, we staged our Christmas program and auction at an old warehouse…one that used to process dill pickles. YEARS later, yep, still smells like pickles.
