Three Scare-a-licious Books for Halloween

Twenty years ago today, I became a mother. If that’s not scary, I don’t know what is! But all of a sudden I was reading board books, picture books, and even novels to my son. The sound of the words soothed me. And him. And each Halloween, new books marked another year in our lives together. So, happy birthday James. You’re twenty Halloween celebrations old!

Here are my three favorite Halloween stories.

1.Halloween Hustle, by Charlotte Gunnufson and illustrated by  Kevan J. Atteberry is the delightful story of a skeleton who falls apart every time he dances! And the book trailer has a catchy tune you can sing along to with your little ones.

In the dark, a funky beat.

Something white with bony feet.

Skeleton dancing up the street,

Doing the Halloween Hustle.

2. Moldilocks and the Three Scares, by Lynne Marie, illustrated by David Rodriguez Lorenzo.

You could be my
lab assistant,” mused
Mama. “My nightmares
have been answered.”

In this fractured fairy tale, Lynne Marie creates a monsterly world where family is made up of who you love. Clever puns and text combine with expressive illustrations, enhancing this darling story that covers themes of adoption, family, love and acceptance.

Brains! Not Just a Zombie Snack by Stacy McAnulty, illustrated by Matthew Rivera

Don’t worry. I’m not going to eat your brain. I gave that up hours ago!

Human brains used to be my favorite food.

(About 75 percent water. 100 percent delicious.)

I feel brainy just thinking about this book! Funny, punny, and fact-packed, it’s the kind of book you’ll want to read and re-read.
