Guest Post by Carrie Pearson
Back in the (pre-pandemic) day, writers and illustrators used to gather in person for most of our conferences and workshops. It was our normal. Then, we had to change course. We stumbled into distance learning and virtual connections. Eventually, we became proficient Zoomers and Google Meeters. But it was never the same.
Thankfully, we’re on the other side! Returning to in-person conferences is like rekindling a former relationship…one we think of fondly, but the details are a bit hazy.
As the co-chair of an upcoming in-person conference, I’d like to refresh our collective memories. Remember the thrill of committing to our craft despite roadblocks? Saying yes to ourselves for a day, a weekend, or even a week while the rest of the world manages just fine without us? The buzz of anticipation while deciding what to pack? The tangible joy of being in a physical space with people who get us and our passion?
Suddenly, an in-person conference feels new again! It’s not just an event but a celebration of:
The Human Connection
Virtual conferences, while valuable, don’t replace the magic of face-to-face interactions. When we are together, we speak, listen, and react in real time. We respond to nuances and nonverbal cues and make connections as full (non-pajamaed) versions of ourselves.
Learning and Creativity in 3D
There’s a depth to in-person learning that extends beyond the confines of a screen. Workshops, presentations, and panel discussions come alive when experienced in the same physical space. The energy in the room, the shared feelings, and the immediate feedback create an immersive experience that virtual settings struggle to replicate. Plus, in-person conferences serve as a breeding ground for creativity. A change of scenery and diverse minds coming together inspire fresh ideas and perspectives.
Spontaneous Networking and Community Building
Virtual breakout rooms have their merits, but they lack the organic nature of impromptu networking. Picture a conversation over coffee with someone who creates in your specific genre or an unplanned post-breakout chat deepening your understanding. The spontaneity of networking adds a layer of richness. Long-term friendships, critique groups, and new communities are built at in-person conferences, often when we least expect it.
Having Fun!
We don costumes. We laugh. We reconnect with our inner child, and most importantly, we make memories to carry us through the rough spots of being children’s bookmakers.
The Delight of Possibility
Being in a bubble with acquiring editors, art directors, and agents offers possibilities for our careers that can’t be replicated in a virtual setting. Participating in pitch sessions, art shows, portfolio reviews, and other conference extras allows us to shine and be noticed. Time and time again, creatives find their industry partners at conferences. Acquiring professionals find their next authors, illustrators, and projects. You could be the one.
Here’s to the pleasure of being present in spaces where ideas flourish, and connections thrive. Welcome back to the joy of in-person conferences! Check out these upcoming opportunities:

Besides all the inspiration and pages of notes I took at the last MMW Conference, it was a fanTAStic excuse to don the milk maid costume you see above! Ha ha! Not sure if I’ll dress up this time, but I can hardly wait to go to my third MMW!

I keep hoping ours will come back in person!

I hope it will, too. It’s a leap of faith on the part of the organizers, though because some conference numbers aren’t what they used to be yet.

One of the important parts of “in person” is that you set aside time to be an author!

Whoop Whoop! Love In-Person conferences. As I type this from my hotel room in New York, I am attending the SCBWI-Winter Conference. Last night I got to connect with other writers and illustrators over drinks and food. It doesn’t get much better than that. Today we start in with the work and fun. I can hardly wait to be at the Marvelous Midwest Conference in April!!! It will be awesome.
Thanks, Carrie, for being the Marvelous Midwest Fearless Leader.

Totally agree! Sometimes it feels hard to claim that time and space for ourselves. But it is important for us and for the children our books will impact.
