Celebrate Black History Month with THE DAVENPORTS by debut YA author Krystal Marquis

“The first book in a breathless new series, The Davenports offers a glimpse into a period of African American history often overlooked, while delivering a totally escapist, swoon-worthy read. Inspired by the real-life story of C.R. Patterson and his family, it’s the tale of four determined and passionate young Black women discovering the courage to steer their own path in life – and love.” (From the inside book jacket)

Having binge-watched The Crown and Bridgerton, I can pledge that if either of those series grabbed your interest, you will absolutely adore this YA novel by talented debut author Krystal Marquis. Set in Chicago in the 1910s, the Davenport family fortune stems from the patriarch’s (a formerly enslaved man) creation of the most luxurious horse-drawn carriages available anywhere. A Black family wealthy beyond measure, the Davenports live in a veritable palace. They are blessed with two daughters and one son, each consumed with charting their paths in life and in love.

Olivia, the eldest daughter, knows her duty is to marry well, and in her parents’ estimation, that person is Jacob Lawrence, a purportedly wealthy young man, who has recently moved from London. But when she meets civil rights Leader Washington DeWight, she’s drawn into his orbit.

Helen, the younger daughter, is more comfortable fixing cars than dressing and acting as society dictates. When she least expects it, she and Jacob find themselves falling in love, despite the fact that his looming engagement to Olivia seems unavoidable.

Naturally, John Davenport, the sole son, is expected to inherit the Davenport dynasty. But he has visions for the business that differ from his father’s. It’s clear that sparks fly between him and Amy Rose, the maid who dreams of opening her own beauty salon. But it takes great courage for any young man or woman to act against long-held family obligations and expectations, and harder still when power and reputation are on the line.

Speaking of pressure, none have it worse than Ruby, Olivia’s best friend, whose father’s political dreams have drained the family’s finances. Her parents constantly remind Ruby that she has to marry John Davenport. If she doesn’t, their financial ruin will be laid upon her slim shoulders. The one who pursues her is Harrison, who has much to recommend him but doesn’t possess John’s wealth or influence.

How this all plays out will delight and enlighten you…and have you counting down the days until the sequel is available. Luckily, we don’t have too long to wait!

After reading The Davenports, you’ll be drawn to research C.R. Patterson and his family, whose lives inspired this novel. Both the novel and the research it encourages will help you to honor and celebrate Black History Month. Looking for more books to help you, your families, and your classrooms celebrate?
