Kids are books are my favorite. That’s why I’m drawn to writing kidlit. That’s why I’m always reading at least 5 books at once and that’s probably one of the reasons I have 5 kids of my own. Reading aloud to my kids synergizes two of my favorite things, making it more appealing than ever. Here is a list of my family’s top 10 picture book read alouds. (I.e. we have read each of these books a gazillion times and we still love them!)
1. The Adventures of Beekle, The Unimaginary Friend, by Dan Santat
2. Cock-a-Doodle Oops!, by Lori Grusin Degman
3. Creepy Carrots, by Aaron Reynolds
4. The Monstore, by Tara Lazar
5. Mustache Baby, by Bridget Heos
6. Something Extraordinary, by Ben Clanton
7. That is Not a Good Idea! by Mo Willems
8. The Three Ninja Pigs, by Corey Rosen Schwartz
9. You Nest Here with Me, by Jane Yolen and Heidi E. Y. Stemple
10. Wolfie the Bunny, by Ame Dyckman

Thanks for the suggestions, I have more books on order! My two favorite read-alouds are:
Cowpoke Clyde and Dirty Dawg by Lori Mortensen and (An older book, but totally fun book to read if you like playing with voices) is Little Tricker the Squirrel Meets Big Double the Bear. I’ve heard storytellers take this one to shows.

Thanks for this list. I know some of these but not others. My favorite read-aloud is Little Chicken Duck by Tim Beiser. It is perfectly silly.

Thanks SO much for including Oops on your list – I’m honored to be among those nine awesome books!! One of my all time favorite read alouds is an oldie but goodie – A Fly Went By, by Mike McClintock. It’s so well written that you can read it really fast and my kids and students always loved that!

Save this post Kirsti! In August each year there is a #pb10for10 blog hop that is tons of fun. Search the hashtag on Twitter, or here’s my list from 2014: https://bildebok.wordpress.com/2014/08/10/august-picture-book-10-for-10-the-2014-edition/

Thank you so much! Do you know a cute little factoid? Aaron Reynolds and I sold our respective books above on the same exact day!
My favorite read-aloud is THAT RABBIT BELONGS TO EMILY BROWN because I can do a very sill;y, naughty British accents. It’s so fun for me when there are multiple voices to perform in a picture book. I absolutely adore reading aloud.

How fun that you and Aaron Reynolds sold your books on the same day! I love reading aloud too–it’s so fun to listen to people’s reactions to a delightful picture book.

We overlap with some choices. I would add: It’s Only Stanley by Jon Agee, By Mouse and Frog by Deborah Freedman, Wherever You go by Pat Miller, enormous smallness by Matthew Burgess, Compost Stew by Mary Siddle and Water is Water by Amanda Paul.
