Hey writers,
We survived quite the heat wave in Boston and as summer continues to fly by, I will persist in my journey to share writing goals and resources with all of you. Thank you for the accountability check and for sharing great resources. Join me if you haven’t yet!
I invite you to:
- Pick one resource or opportunity. Think about what you’re working on right now and pick something that will help you make progress with that work!
- Share your experiences with resources over the last month and what opportunities you want to pursue in the next month in the comments!
Will you join me on this journey?
REFLECTIONS ON JULY
In JULY, I submitted my writing to two agents and added to my agent sub list. I wrote, revised and sold a story to Stories Podcast! This is the first time I’ve been paid for my writing (Woohoo!)
I didn’t jump into revising my MG wip because of my work for the podcast, but I did start jotting an idea for a new story that might be somewhere in the lower MG or chapter book realm. Do others feel more motivated to start a first draft than to revise?
What did you accomplish this month? Don’t forget to share in the comments!
Lexi’s AUGUST GAME PLAN
This month I want to conquer the revision beast. I am debating the first three classes listed here, I wish I could afford (and have time for) all of them!
- Second Draft Boot Camp for Novelists August 13, 2022. So you’ve finished the first draft of a novel. Fantastic! But now comes the next phase: editing, a maddening term that encompasses everything from rearranging commas to switching the narrative point of view.
- SEIZE THE READER: WRITING FOR EMOTIONAL IMPACT, AN ON DEMAND ONLINE COURSE– I am planning to reread a manuscript I put down a while ago, and revise while working through this on-demand course.
- Amplify YOUR Voice: A Two-Night Mini for Novelists (August 23-25) Join author Aminah Mae Safi and editor Kat Brzozowski to explore a Voice that is uniquely your own. A Voice that comes from within— inner conflicts, outside pressures, personal values, experiences, identity, and so much more.
- Four on 400 (free) A monthly contest where 1 kidlit writer is selected to receive feedback on the opening 400 words of their manuscript. August 4, 2022.
What will you accomplish this month? Let’s celebrate each other in the comments!
REGISTER IN AUGUST, HAPPENING LATER:
Keep an eye on some FUTURE opportunities you might want to register for early:
HIGHLIGHTS FOUNDATION COURSES($)
- Line Editing Your YA or MG Novel (Fall 2022) This six-week online course offers the skills to revise and enrich your novel, and features live sessions with faculty, structured assignments, community interaction, and goal-setting.
- Relationships in MG & YA Novels: An Online Course with Editor Kat Brzozowski (September 22-October 13) The relationships between characters are the backbone of every great contemporary MG and YA novel. Lexi, congratulations on selling your story! Thank you so much for pulling together this useful information every month. Perhaps I’ll try that Four on 400 this month or next.

I’m focusing on picture books right now, but agree that these are great opportunities. Particularly the Highlights Foundation one about MG and YA character relationships…that one sounds really interesting.
